Grade and Subject:6th Grade, Life Science
Species Adaptation and Survival
Science Standard:L.EV.06.11 Explain how behavioral characteristics (adaptation, instinct, learning, habit) of animals help them to survive in their environment
Other Standard:W.GN.06.01 Write a cohesive narrative piece such as a personal narrative, adventure,
tall tale, folktale, fantasy, or poetry that includes appropriate conventions to the genre,
employing elements of characterization for major and minor characters; internal and/or external conflict; and issues of plot, theme, and imagery.
Lesson Description:n the before lesson, we will cover the types of things necessary for survival in everyday life (water, food, shelter, etc). This step should only take 5-10 minutes
Then the question will be posed to students ''How would you survive in an arctic climate?'' Students must think or write out a list of all the adaptions that must be made in order to survive in the harsh, cold climate. Student must then write a descriptive narrative about what they would need to do to survive in such a climate.
They will be given the scenario that they are the lone survivors of a plan crash in the Alaskan wilderness during the winter. They must think logically through all the obstacles they may face and use descriptive language to describe their attempt for survival. Students will be given 2 class hours to complete this task and however much time outside of class to complete it.
